As part of Milan Design Week 2026, the international interiors community turned its attention to a venue that impressively combines history and contemporary design: Palazzo Confalonieri – Fondazione Cariplo in the heart of Milan. From April 20 to 26, AUSSENWIRTSCHAFT AUSTRIA and the Austrian Furniture Industry presented “Design Palazzo Austria”, a curated showcase of contemporary furniture design, offering a compact yet multifaceted insight into the country’s design DNA. Staged by the architecture studio Vasku & Klug, the exhibition created an atmospheric setting in which craftsmanship, innovation and aesthetic precision came together to form a cohesive overall experience.

For Austria’s tenth appearance at Milan Design Week, more than 30 furniture and design companies presented their latest products. Following the success of 2024, the exhibition once again took place in the elegant palazzo in the Brera Design District, which captivated visitors this year with its prestigious halls and ornate architectural details.
As renowned member companies of the Austrian Furniture Industry, Bene, BRAUN Lockenhaus, Conform Badmöbel, Joka, Mayr-Schulmöbel, TEAM 7 and Wiesner-Hager were among the exhibitors. Their designs reflect the full range of contemporary living environments, from office solutions and bathroom furniture to residential concepts. One thing quickly becomes clear: Austrian furniture design does not think in categories, but in ways of living. Good design here is about far more than pure form. It is the result of a complex interplay of material expertise, technical sophistication and design sensitivity. Refined lines meet innovative functions, sustainable strategies and intelligent details – always with the aim of creating tangible added value in everyday life.
Aesthetics Meet Function
The strength of the Austrian furniture industry lies in its ability to combine aesthetics with functional intelligence. The result is a timeless design language that follows neither fleeting trends nor short-lived effects. Instead, it produces furniture that is durable, authentic and retains its value, transforming spaces into places of calm and comfort. Whether it is tested materials in the kitchen, smart functions for the home office or flexible systems for living spaces, the designs demonstrate a deep understanding of the needs of modern everyday life. As early as the development stage, aspects such as sustainability, ergonomics and suitability for everyday use are consistently taken into account. Developed with a keen eye for proportion and detail, modular concepts with a high degree of customisation emerge.

Craftsmanship as a Cultural Foundation
A defining characteristic of the industry is its strong SME structure. Many of the companies are family-run and have a long tradition of furniture manufacturing. Today, this accumulated expertise is combined with state-of-the-art production technology to create a distinctive promise of quality. High-quality, often naturally treated solid woods from sustainably managed forests, precisely processed materials and complex mechanisms are all expressions of this expertise. True quality often reveals itself in the details that remain hidden: in carefully considered interiors, intelligent storage solutions or subtly integrated lighting concepts. It is these details that make furniture from Austria long-lasting companions.
Austria on the International Stage
During the exhibition, “Design Palazzo Austria” proved to be a popular meeting point for in-depth and inspiring conversations. The individual companies used the opportunity to exchange ideas with international decision-makers from the worlds of design, architecture and business about current developments, projects and future perspectives. This was also one of the reasons why the event was of such importance to Austria’s furniture industry. “During this week, Milan was the vibrant centre of the entire design world,” says Dr Georg Emprechtinger, Chairman of the Austrian Furniture Industry, enthusiastically. “More than 300,000 visitors filled the streets to discover, absorb and discuss the latest trends in interior design. That is absolutely unique. It made it all the more rewarding for us, as Austrians, to be able to showcase our full creative strength and expertise here.”
WKÖ Vice President Mag.ª Angelika Sery-Froschauer adds: “A joint presence in Milan brings together the strengths of our design location. As the industry’s most important platform, Milan Design Week provides ideal conditions for cooperation, concrete business opportunities and international visibility.”
